Talking Textures
The exhibition “TALKING TEXTURES” features works by five female artists who incorporate various craft techniques into their sculptural practices. It explores the narrative potential of the material – with all its qualities, traditions, and associations -and its role in the process of artistic form-finding. Nicoleta Auersperg, for example, shapes glass into angular geometric forms through great physical exertion; Sasha Auerbakh presents curved abstract metal sculptures reminiscent of rustic wrought-iron shop signs; and Nadine Lemke crochets fragile, floor-to-ceiling weaves from metal threads. But subversive spaces for action are also created to examine social processes. Michaela Schweighofer and Karoline Dausien, for example, explore feminist and sociopolitical approaches in their ceramic and textile works. In keeping with the principles of New Materialism—which posits that objects and materials do not remain passive but exercise their own agency—the material itself can now become an (active) participant.
